Abstract
Bio-similar nutraceuticals: Th e nutraceuticals market is growing signifi cantly, and a day is not far it will surpass the pharmaceutical market. Th e forecast for nutraceuticals market is about $ 176 Billion market size by 2022. Th e signifi cant increase in the market size is creating pressure on the naturally available ingredients used in nutraceuticals. Applications of genetically modifi ed materials are being explored by the people to be used in place of natural materials. Th ere are no reports about the usefulness of this material and not much scientifi c data about their safety and therapeutic effi cacy as compared to natural nutraceuticals ingredients. Th is is more challenging in the traditional medicine systems such as botanical drug products, Chinese medicine and ayurvedic medicines. Th ese products majority of which are based on natural plants and have lot of traditional processes before the product reaches the patients. With the advent of genetically modifi ed natural products will they exactly behave the way the natural products are behaving or diff erent. When you use these genetically modifi ed materials in nutraceuticals, herbal drugs or natural products are you really comparing apples with apples or you are comparing apples with oranges. Th is presentation will cover the challenges for such products and a need for global standardization process for nutraceuticals and their ingredients.
